him out: and it would be more natural to suppose that it is run

at no very large profit by way of keeping the business in the hands of the Yaumati ring. The figures taken by police on lat

December, 1913, as above were:-

Two launches, making 32 trips in all between them

in a service that runs for 12 hours daily only, carried 1,522 pas- sengers at 4 cents per passenger; making deily takings of $60.88, or yearly takings of 822,221. The expenses per launch as above setting off the longer run against the smaller number of trips are 89,300 each per annum. The expenses of the Lun Cheung wharf have already been included in the consideration of the Yaumati

launches, so that only $600 per annum are left in this case for

the Sham Shui Po wharf: bringing the total running expenses for

this line to £19,200, and leaving a margin of some 83,000 per

annum. So at the worst, it would hardly seem to be run at an

actual less: and as a part of a larger scheme, could even be made to add to the profit the purpose for which it is in fact now

used.

This plan would dispose of the whole of this side

of the Kowloon Peninsula, and would form a section naturally complete in itself; but it would be well to keep in mind for later developments the inclusion of the other ferries running in the Harbour to Hung Hom, Shau Ki Wan, Kowloon City, and perhaps elsewhere.

The enquiries into this matter have led me far from my original object, in fact almost in the other direction; for they have tended in the conclusions to an actual loss of revenue for the Chinese Charities. The Ferry Scheme in itself would not benefit them; and the revenue now derived from voluntary subscriptions from the companies concerned, the larger revenue that seems likely to be so derived, and the amount yielded
