at Sam Shui Po used by Tack On and Tung Hing. The old

Companies also reduced the fare to three cents. In November

1917 the pier was destroyed. The old Company applied for

permission to rebuild this pier or erect a new one but this

permission was refused. The Sze Youk Company continued the

service using a pier which belongs to Li Ping a member of

the Syndicate in opposition. The old Company had to dis-

continue a regular service save that, when the tide suited, they ran to the Government Stone Pier at Sam Shui Po. They

are still using it but can only get 5 or 7 times a day

instead of 24 times for each launch when the regular service

existed.

To summarize; a proper launch service, running at regular

intervals, was first started by Wong Lan Sang, who now represents the combination, as far back as 1902, since which

time improvements have been effected from time to time by

the addition of new and larger launches and by alterations

to old launches at enormous costs. After having undergone

many vicissitudes, including losses sustained for many years

due to keen competitions and to the depreciation in value of Dragon copper cents, and including the two typhoons of 1906 and 1907, the first of which destroyed or damaged about

eighty per cent of their launches, the combination began to reap the reward of their enterprise and perseverance only a few years ago; and it would be very hard if, on mere

allegations made against them by a few persons who are

desirous of ousting them, regulations were introduced which

might deprive them of their regular business, upon which

thousands depend for their livelihood. It should not be

forgotten that it is to some extent due to the enterprise

and perseverance of the combination that the Yau-ma-ti, Mong Kok and Sam Shui Po Districts have become popularised.
