After two or three months running the service was
found to be tunning at a loss and reduced to eight launches
instead of twelve running to and from two points instead of
three, This service has been continued to the present day
the launches running from 5 a.m. to 11.30 p.m. in Summer and
5.30 a.m. to 11.30 p.m. in Winter at regular intervals of
fifteen minutes up to 10 p.m. after that at intervals of half
an hour. The total number of trips made dally during Winter
1s 320 and during Summer is 336.
In 1911 Commander Beckwith suggested the ferry launches
should be improved by the addition of bridges and the employ-

at a cost of about $42,000 and a corresponding increase of
cost of repairs for 28 launches fitted with bridges as the
combination had bridges fitted to other launches than those
engaged in the service as they might have at any time to use
such launches for the service. At this period 140 dragon
coppers could be purchased by $1.00 and the fares were mostly
paid in such coppers involving the combination in heavy
losses but notwithstanding this the fares were not raised.
These losses continued till 1913 when these copper coins were
prohibited and business improved,
In 1913 and 1914 the service was further improved by
the construction of eight new launches of 78 to 88 feet fet
long with bridges and two masts at a cost of about $25,000
each 1.0. $200,000, improvements which were much appreciated
by the passengers.
On the outbreak of war in 1914 the Government requisi-
tioned 23 of the launches including all the eight new launches
for harbour work, and the combination had to revert to the
