Sir,
1.
Yaumati Ferry Service.
Supplementary to our letter of the 10th instant, we are
requested by Mr.Wong Lan Shang, the Chairman of the 14
Companies carrying on the Yaumati Ferry Service, to address
you in respect of the proposal of the Government to put such
service upon a fresh basis.
2. Our clients have been carrying on the service since 1902.
Frior to that date the service was entirely disorganised and
independent and the launches engaged in it used to run
independently and at irregular intervals greatly to the
inconvenience of the public,
3. In 1902 Mr. Wong Lan Shang who, prior to that date, was
carrying on an independent ferry service, came to an arrange-
ment with other parties interested for the Joint working of
such service and reorganised it in a manner adapted to suit
the convenience of the passengers and effected a great
improvement in the system.
4. For the purpose of the service our clients erected four
piers at Jubilee Street Hongkong, Public Square Street Yaumati, Western Market Hongkong and Waterloo Road Yaumati,
at a total cost of upwards of $34,000. Their permits in
respect of these piers expire at the end of the current year.
The piers have cost considerable sums for repairs and mainten-
ance since they were erected.

From time to time, as the reorganised service was carried
on by our clients, improvements were made therein and small
launches were replaced by larger ones with bridges to meet the necessities of the growing traffic.
