The S. 8. *Clon- -falloch", of Singapore registry, had been lying at the Taikoo Do ckyard since the and of January awaiting repairs, which the omers were unwilling to carry out. The matter was taken up by the Commodore who talegraphed on the 14th. March to the Commander-in- -Chief in Singapore, suggesting that in view of the shortage of tonnage something should be done. The Commander-in-Chief telegraph- -ed on the 21st. April that the Singapore Government were dealing with the matter; the Commodore telegraphed on the 1st. Lay that nothing was being done; and on the 25th. May the Hongkong Covern. -zont telegraphed to the Government of the Straits Settlements offering to repair the ship and to run her under the Hongkong Scheme, the intention being that she should carry coal. The Goverment of the Straits Settlements were unable to accept the offer, and it was therefore necessary to look for tonnage alse- -where. The Shipping Control Committee considered the matter very carefully and they decided that the 8, 8. *Telemachus" was the only vessel suitable for the purpose that could be spared. They nocordingly broke the charter, which was bringing in Straits $115,000 a month, and let the vessel to the Khilan kining Association at 855,000 a month for the express purpose of bringing! coal to Hongkong for specified industries. It may be mentioned that shortly after this arrangement was completed Colonel Thomson telegraphed to the effect, that London was asking whother assistmce could be given to the Kilm Association, and that the Admiralty were pressing for an early reply. In November the ship was employed to bring rice to Hongjong.
