GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG. 18th. March, 1919.

My Lord,

I have the honour to address Your Lordship

on the subject of two girls' schools belonging to the Church

Missionary Society in this Colony to which it is desirable in

my opinion that the Government should give some assistance.

2.

The first of these schools was opened in

the year 1884 in a house know as "Fairlea" in Bonham Road where

it was carried on until the year 1911 when it had to be removed

as the site was required for the erection of St. John's Hall

for University Students. The school was then removed to a site

a short distance away known as the Remaining Portion of Inland Lot 1096 adjoining Inland Lot 1096 belonging to the Church Mis- -sionary Society. Inland Lot 1096 was obtained by the Universi-

-ty last October at a high price in order to prevent it being sold for the purpose of erecting Chinese tenements,

and the Government at the same time decided to acquire the

Remaining Portion of Inland Lot 1096 as the presence of the school close to the hostels of the University and the houses of the University Staff was considered undesirable. The

second school is known as St. Stephen's Girls' College,

which was founded in the year 1906 and was accommodated in

a large house in Caine Road up to February, 1918. The
