THE HONGKONG POLICE RESERVE
The reason for the creation of this Auxiliary Armed Police Force was stated in the following words at a Meeting of the Legislative Council of the Colony, held on the first day of October, 1914:-
The necessity for a large body of Special Constables in times of emergency has been demonstrated recently, and the usefulness of such a body would be considerably increased by preliminary training, while the enrolment of a large body of Special Police at short notice would be much facilitated by the existence of a Reserve consisting of men who had declared their willingness to serve as Special Constables.
By the end of 1918 over 800 men-representative of the British, Portuguese, Indian, and Chinese sections of the community-had been on the strength of the Force. The establishment included :-
Staff.
8 Platoons of Foot Police. Detachment of Mounted Police. Water Police.
Search Supervisors. Ambulance Platoon. Motor Cycle Patrols. Maxim Gunners.
Band.
Orchestra.
Buglers and Drummers.
