Batterbes,

The case of Mr. James Jefferson, whose letter I

return, has been repeatedly considered by Mr. Hodge personally

and this Department. He was invalided after a relatively

short period of service for prolapse of the rectum, an

infantile trouble which recurred while he was under training,

and which our medical authorities could find no sufficient

reason for attributing to service. Jefferson appealed to

the Officers Appeal Board, who decided, with considerable

hesitation, to give the benefit of the doubt in his favour.

He was then granted temporary retired pay at the highest

rate. On the question of its renewal, the medical board

have assessed his disablement at a lower degree; Jefferson

has appealed against this, and further enquiry is being made.

While M. Hodge cannot undertake to follow every

point in his lengthy epistle, he would like me to mention

the following points. Jefferson married after resigning

his commission and when he was, on his own showing, quite

disabled and unable to earn anything; his plea on behalf of

and finds that his case has received all possible:
