We may add that prior to the outbreak of war it was customary
to look upon the various houses of Melchers & Co. in China and
Hong Kong as one firm to which credit facilities were granted for
use at the different places as desired.
In our own case, we have besides a definite acknowledgment from
the Hong Kong house of their joint and several responsibility to us
for our advances to the Shanghai house,
