letter No.214664/45 of the 31st of December, with regard to the disabilities

imposed on Messrs. John C.Siegfried and Company of San Francisco, in traging with

Hong Kong.

2. In your letter No.189476/45 of

the 9th July, you transmitted a copy of

a despatch from His Majesty's Consul

General at New York, enclosing reports on

this firm, and suggesting that the Union

Trading Company of Hong Kong might be

informed of the enemy element in it.

A copy of this despatch was transmitted

to the Governor of Hong Kong in the

despatch, of which a copy is enclosed.

A copy of Mr. Severn's reply was enclosed

in the letter from this Department of the

10th December. It will be seen from the

latter despatch that as the result of the

communication addressed by the Hong Kong

Government to the Union Trading Company

the Company decided to cease correspon-

dence with the firm. It would seem

probable
