WAR OFFICE,

16.August 1918,

With further reference to your letter 33995 of the 22nd

July, transmitting a copy of a despatch from the Governor of Hong Kong enclosing statements showing particulars as to the opium monopoly and the military contribution for the year 1917, I am commended by the Army Council to inform you that there is a clerical error on the first page of the statement of expenses of the opium monopoly, the total of that page being $32,442.21 and not

32,644.54 as shown. The deduction from revenue on the statement

as to the military contribution payable would therefore appear to be $ 202.33 too much and a further contribution amounting to 20% of

this sum is consequently due to this Department, 1.e. the balance due would appear to be $ 330,126.04 and not 330,085.57. It is

assumed that the former sum will be paid to this Department.
