the ruthless manner in which kuzuki & Company hamile their business has earned for them the dislike of thousands of people, and it was no surprise that their premises were singled out for attack by the rioters and totally destroyed. I was informed by Dusuki's men that they had rumple warning of the impending assault but that it was worse than they expected. Nevertheless they succeeded in saving tanny of their most important books and documenta. The surprising thing is that the Authorities having also had early informa- tion of the contamlated riots were not more successful in handling them. It shows, na I anid before, a loss of autho- rity, empecially in the towns.

And yet that the Japanese are still prepared obediently to follow official guiding and instruction in some matters is proved by what took place during this same visit. On my way South, I passed troop trains at several places carry- ing troops for the Siberian exnedition, proving that troops were on the move but nowhere was there the slightest inter- ent or excitement shown. There days later a complete change occurred. It appears that the soldiers had complained of the lack of enthusiasm, and that, in fact, they had to shout

their own "Banzai." The Authorities thereupon issued OT- ders that the people along the line were to give the troops a proper send off. Forthwith flags were flown from very house, they were planted out in the rice fields, they were
