With reference to our latter of 20th July 1917 and to previous correspondence, I have the honour to enclose, for the information of the Secretary of State, the annual valuations of the securities held by us against the note issues of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation and the Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China, respectively.

I also enclose copies of letters from the Banks as to the notes in circulation in the Straits Settlements on 31st

December 1917.

The valuations show that in the case of the Chartered Bank the excess amounts to 24,732. 7. 0, and that in the case of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation the deficiency has increased from £769,971, 4.10. to £991,613,18. 0.
