Sir,

GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
HONGKONG. 9th. December, 1918.
I have the honour to state that consider-
-able work has devolved upon the Audit Department in connect- -ion with the examination of accounts kept by the Custodian of Enemy Property, accounts of the Shipping Control Committeo, and accounts of cargo from sheltering ships.
2.
Mr. Dallin, Assistant Auditor, left the Colony on the 18th. May, 1918, in order to proceed on Active Service, and Mr. Phalips, the Auditor, was absent from the 30th. July to the 27th. October, 1918, on his annual tour of inspection of the Weihaiwei and Postal Aganoy accounts. Kuch extra work entailing considerable overtime has in consequence been thrown upon Mr. Brayn, Assistant Auditor, and Mr. Heathcote, Senior Clerk; and these officers are still continuously employed upon the special accounts referred to. I have accordingly to recommend that Mr. Brayn and Mr. Heathcote should receive monthly allowances at the rate of 8125 and 875 respectively from the date of Mr. Dallin's departure, to continue until that officer's return
or until the additional work is completed.

WALTER LONG, M.P.,
