GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG. 4th. December, 1918.

I have the honour to acknowledge the

receipt of your telegram of the 29th. November which decoded

was as follows:-

"Please telegraph tomorrow or Sunday rough estimate in round figures of cost of war met or to be met from public revenue of Colony giving separately

(1) Cost incurred by direct contribution to

carrying on war.

(2) Cost for local defence.

(3) Cost incurred indirectly for war purposes

or necessitated by war emergencies as far

as it can be estimated.

Quite rough estimate will suffice".

2. My reply, which was sent in cypher

through a misunderstanding was as follows:-

"Your telegram of November 29th. estimate is

as follows:-

(1) £1,550,000.

(2) £60,000

+

(3) £180,000,

In addition Military Contribution for years

1915 to 1918 inclusive estimated at about

£1,500,000".
