GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

313

HONGKONG. 2nd. December, 1918.

sir,

With reference to my Despatch No. 318 of the 16th, November, I have the honour to enclose a copy of a letter from Mr. P. P. J. Wodehouse, Deputy Superintendent of Police, in which he requests that his application for the post of Captain Superintendent of Police may be forwarded for your consideration. I caused Mr. Wodehouse to be informed that I was unable to support his application as other arrange- -ments were in contemplation for filling the post of Captain Superintendent of Police in the event of a vacancy occurring.

2. Owing to the reference to the work done with regard to Indian sedition in paragraph 5 of the letter I have made this Despatch Confidential. Though I am pleased to record the fact that Mr. Wodehouse has done mich useful work in connection with the Indian branch of the force and in dealing with sedition in the Far East, I do not consider him suitable for the post of Captain Superintendent of Police.

I have the honour to be,

sir.

Your most obedient,

humble servant,

Claustever

Officer Administering the Government.
