The Goremment Auditor rang me up

I spoke to the clerk and told him that the books must be brought up to date and sent in not later than the morning of Monday September 30th. Also spoke to the Government Auditor and promised to let him have

the books on that day.

Monday September 30th.

I asked if the books were ready and

was told 'No but that they would be by noon: Just before noon

I again saw the clerk who said the books were ready. I saw then

A holiday, birthday of Confucius;

I was at the College at 8.30 a.m. and as I wanted to see the clerk sent to his home for him and was told he had gone out.

Tadagsday October 2nd.

I again sent for the clerk and was told he had not been at home for 2 nights. Then the Government Auditor rang up and said he had not received the books. I searched for and at last found them locked up in an old store cupboard. Until then I had no suspicion that anything was wrong. I at once looked into the books and seeing that they were not in order sent them to the Auditor with a request that he would examine them and let me know the real state ɗ affaire. I proceeded to examine paysheets, cheque counterfoils &c., and discovered that the cheque for 'Chinese Staff' had been made out for £1,682.76 instead of for £1,582.76. Also that 350 drawn as part of this cheque and which should have been refunded to the Treasury on socount of Mr. Tai Tung-pui failing to take up his appointment was also missing.
