I have the honour to inform you that owing to the shortness of staff in the Public Works Depart- -ment owing to several Overseers having been spared for active service with His Majesty's Forces, additional duties have been performed by Messrs. Barrington, Edmonds, Kynoch, Brown and Grimes, involving considerable overtime.

The enclosed return shows the nature of the work performed by these officers and the extra allowances which I recommend should be paid to them. The allowances have all been calculated up to the 30th.

but in the September, event of the extra work continuing I would be glad to have your approval by telegraph for the allowances to be paid up

to the end of the year.
