The parents or other natural guardians hand
over a girl to an employer "in exchange for a money payment
not
It is a sale and the girl is not a slave or chattel (no puk) but a maidservant (mui tsai). She however receives ho wages and cannot leave her employer by giving notice or otherwise, but has to stay with her employer unless and until she is "redeemed". If she wishes to marry
she must first be redeemed.
Apparently the employer has
a power of re-sale and this has been occasionally exercis- ed in Hong Kong (Russell Report page 3). The Governor
is silent on this point but see the evidence in the Hong Kong Weekly Express of 25th August, 1917, page 139.
