I have the honour to inform you that in March last Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis appeared in epidemic form in the Colony, and that it was suggested to me that the Rockefeller Institute in New York might be willing to send one of their Staff here with the special object of advising this Government on the best steps to be taken to combat the epidemic and especially on the subject of the local manufactur of a serum and vaccine, fitting the exact strain of the micro- -organiam which exists here, for the treatment of patients. I approved this suggestion and the correspondence, of which a copy is enclosed, ensued with the Rockefeller Institute and His Majesty's Ambassador at Washington. The telegraphic correspondence with His Majesty's Ambassador related to applications for the supply of serum for the treatment of patients. The Rockefeller Instituta generously supplied a considerable quantity of serum free of cost which has been of the greatest use in the Colony and in meeting urgent demanda from places outside the Colony where the disease had appeared.
Lieutenant Olitsky is now about to return
to America, and I enclose an advance copy of the interesting and valuable report which he has furnished, together with copies of lettere addressed to him and to the Director of the
