sir.

Referring to your confidential despatch of

the 30th May, 1917, I have the honour to forward the en- closed copies of letters received from Mr. E. D. C. Wolfe regarding the question of his salary on promotion to the post of First Police Magistrate.

2.

Mr. Wolfe as Postmaster General drew a salary of $5,400, the equivalent of £810, and he also re- ceived £100 per annum from Imperiol funds, the latter sum being payable at the rate of the day without privileged compensation. On his promotion accordingly I allowed him to draw a salary in dollars equal to 2910 per annum, in lieu of the initial salary of $6,000, which is the equiva- lent of £900.

3.

Mr. Wolfe, in paragraph 2 of his letter of the 3rd. January, refers to privileges which he enjoyed as Postmaster General. The Postmaster General, as Postal Censor, draws an allowance of 84 a day, the loss of which mede a considerable difference to Mr. Wolfe's position financially.

4.

In the circumstances I have to recommend

that Mr. Wolfe may be allowed to receive the sterling

salary

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

WALTER LONG, M.P.,
