I agree generally with the views expressed

by Dr. Walker in his note of 17/11/17. At Hongkong the thermometere are rotated in the shade in the vicinity of the thermometer shelter, the observer facing the wind, if

any.

The records of the Richard hygrograph in the shelter are standardized by the readings of the rotating thermometers.

Dr. Walker's remarks on the difficulty of obtaining trustworthy observations with rotating ther- -mometers at second-order stations appear to emphasise the necessity of the experimente suggested in § 4 of my report on Sir Napier Shaw's letter of 29/1/18.

I attach a minute which might be sent in reply to Dr. Doberck's letter of 1/3/18, and for the information of this Government offer the following remarks on the points raised by Dr. Doberck.

Units:- Coming from a person drawing pay

from the British Government these obstructionist remarks are interesting but are of no importance, as Dr. Doberck holds no official position. The C.G.S. unite recommended by Sir Napier Shaw will undoubtedly come into general use eventually.

§ 3.

Dr. Doberok opens the paragraph by saying that he has used the tables asked for: he then states that he has not got such a table, and finally forwards the desired information in a different form.

§ 4 & 5.

Dr. Doberck's formulae. Dr. Doberck is

shocked at the suggestion that an outsider" should

compute a formula from his observations, but now, without comment, recommends the use of a totally different

formula to that definitely recommended 6 months ago.
