When questioned by Counsel as to whether a pair of jade and gold sleeve links had not been given him on the 3rd. of January last, Mr. Lloyd replied that he could not remember. This incident caused me to direct that the letter of which I enclose a copy should be addressed to the Superintendent of Imports and Exports, Mr. Tratman. I also attach copy of correspondence with Mr. Hutchison arising out of the case, together with a list of the presents given by Japanese Firms to Messrs. Lloyd and Burn. None of these presents, which have been returned to the donors.is worth more
than $25.

I very much regret to add that this matter so preyed upon the mind of Mr. Lloyd that on the 13th. of October while confined to his bed by indisposition at his house, he attempted to take his life and was removed to Hospital suffering from & wound on the scalp from a bullet discharged from his Service Rifle.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient,
humble servant,
