Assuming that Dr. Doberck used a satisfactory hygro- -meter and that the formula he has adopted is the one which most nearly represents the observations, his new hygrometri- -cal tables would probably be suitable for general use in countries using British Units, if the readings of unaspirated wet bulb thermometers are corrected as indicated above. 10.
No particulars are given in the introduction to the tables, however, as to how Dr. Doberck derived the value of
A in his formula. He states "The value of ▲ has been deter- -mined by aid of alluard's dew point hygrometer from 1.012 observatione made by the late Kr. 7. G. Figg and the writer at the Hong Kong Observatory, and from 1,325 observations made by the writer at his private Observatory, Kowloon, Button, Surrey". In his letter of 19/1/17 to the Colonial Office, however, Dr. Doberck states that the observations made in Hong Kong "have been superseded by long series made here (Surrey) by instruments of different construction and in his letter of 25/6/17 he states "my earlier observations were a failure, and as in the course of years I gained experience I found the reason to be that they were made within doors, and that the wet bulb ought never to be ratated except in the open air, Alluarda hygrometer gave also untrustworthy results, as the ether by which it is cooled
contains a considerable percentage of water, which affects the humidity of the room. All the enclosed observations (made up of about 10.000 individual observations-5 years' work) were made by theeters rotated in the open air and by outdoor air pumped for rather aspirated) into the hygrometer".
11. Until further particulars are obtained a correct estimate of the value of Dr. Doberck's tables cannot be formed The statement in the introduction that they were published at
