I have the honour to snclose, herewith, copy of a letter which I have this day addressed to the following British firms in Hongkong: Messrs. Jardine Mathe- son & Co., Messrs. Butterfield & Swire, The British American Tobacco Company, Messrs. Dodwell & Co., Mesora. Reise & Co. and the Union Insurance Society of Canton, on the subject of providing scholarships for Yunnan students at the Hongkong University. Such a scheme as I have outlined would, I think, materially asvist British interests in this province, nd I trust that you will use your influence to induce British firms in Hongkong to subscribe generously.
