REG MAY 18
GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONGKONG. 13th. March, 1918.
I have the honour to acknowledge the
receipt of your Despatch No. 3 of the 4th, January transmitting

2. I find that the late Mr. Jones had the option of becoming a contributor to the Widows and Orphans' Pension Fund, but did not avail himself or it, and the Government is therefore under no obligation to make any provi- -sion for his widow. In the special circumstances, however, of this case, having regard to Mr. Jones's long and faithful service and to the heavy expanse of living in England at the present time, I am of opinion that as an act of grace a sub- -sistence allowance of £10 a month should be paid to Mrs.Jonas from the 1st. January, 1918, and I telegraphed to you in this sense today.
3. The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corpora- -tion holds shares belonging to the late Mr. Jones worth about £250, and there are fixed deposits to the value of over eleven thousand yen (about £1,200) all of which are due during this year. Commander Beckwith states that he has written to Mrs. Jones offering to wind up the estate in the Colony if she will send him a copy of the probate of the will and other
