With reference to your letter of the 19th inst., enclos- ing us, at the request of the Crown Agents for the Colonies, a copy of the report received from the Colonial Governmentin connection with Corrugated Sheeting supplied to you for Hong Kong The contents of this report have been carefully noted by us and we regret to say that we cannot at all agree with the statements given therein.
The report further says that tests were made of the material and it was found that it was not strong enough to stand the required wind pressure to which the roof would be subjected and we fail to see what kind of a test could have been made. With regards the material bearing the weight of man, we do not guarantee this at all, as we always advise when a man has to go on a roof either for repairs or any other purposes to have running boards fixed and, according, th the report, this seems to be the reason that the material has been condemned as useless.
It is reported that the cases in which the material was packed were intact and unbroken without exception.
We wish to say
that it is necessary for our material to be packed in strong crates, but, of course, when these crates are roughly handled while in transit, which appears to have happened to this consign- ment for Hong Kong the material is sure to split and crack and for this we cannot be held responsible when once the material is out of our hands, and thus the Colonial Government should make a claim from the carriers of the steam ship people at Hong Kong.
When we handed the Asbestos Cement Corrugated Sheets to the London Port Authorities the material was signed for "re- ceived in good condition". Furthermore the material was duly inspected by the Inspector of the Crown Agents for the Colonies before it was packed and was again inspected when the material was crated. We have now had experience in Asbestos Cement paterials for many years and supplied large quantities of same, and we may say that we have never had a complaint of the nature such as the one in question.
