Hong Kong Rly.Reon. No. 129 Indent No.173 (115)
Referring to your letter No. 2 in 53/15 dated the 12th December 1916 with enclosures from the Chief Storekeeper and the Engineer of Ways & Works regarding the corrugated asbestos cement sheets supplied under the above mentioned indent, I have
the honour to inform you that the samples of sheets which were returned have been tested and chemically analyeed and a copy of 21.8.17% the Inspecting Engineer's report is attached. The sheets
supplied were not found to differ in chemical composition materially from "Lammi t" sheets but were of decidedly inferior
strength.
2.
5.9.17.
Copies of recent correspondence with the Consulting
26.3.17. Engineers and the firm are attached. With regard to the second
26.9.17. paragraph of your letter of the 12th December 1916, judging
4.10.17. from the sample of "Lammit" sheets which was sent to us, these
6.10.17. would not safely bear the weight of a man when in position
21.2.18. on the roof. These sheets, however, being of German manufacture
27.3.18. were in any case unobtainable and the nearest available
15.4.18, substitute was ordered. The sheets were in proper condition
when delivered f.o.b. but about 94% appear to have been broken
during the voyage. We have had several complaints also about
breakages of asbestos cement sheets supplied by other makers,
so that the difficulty of shipping this class of material
safely appears to be very great.
3. Considering all the circumstances, the offer of 260
made by the Horseley Co. appears reasonable and has on the
recommendation of the Consulting Engineers been accepted.
Under present conditions, there is no prospect of obtaining
an additional quantity of roofing material of better quality
as requested in the last paragraph of your letter, the whole
