Extension of Old Paint Shop as Leco Shed.

I regret to have to report that the material sent out by the Crown Agents for the roofing of this shed is abso- -lutely useless and that I have rejected it. At your request, Mr. Gale representing the Hon. Director of Public Works inspected the material today and saw the condition it is in.

In Indent No. 115 dated December, 1914, which

was sent to the Crown Agents, their requisition No. 129/1, accom- -panied by drawings and Local Specification the roofing was speci- -fied to be "Lemmit Roofing" this being an asbestos compound and is corrugated. This style of roofing, similar to corrugated iron, has the great advantage over corrugated iron in that it will not corrode and this advantage in a Loco Shed is highly desirable. The material has, I understand, been largely used in the Malay States and elsewhere with antisfactory results. The Local Specification gave the area to be covered as 4,275 sq. ft. and clearly stated that Lammit Sheeting was to be supplied and that no alteration was to be made without section. The material sent out by the Crow Agents has been manufactured by the British Corrugations Ltd. and is obviously very much inferior to "Lamit" as comparison between the two proves.

The cases were only opened during yesterday and today as the material is now required by the Contractor for the erection of the roof. The cases in themselves were intact and

unbroken
