Referring to my telegram of the 26th January
I have the honour to forward the enclosed secount, taken
from the local Press, of the affray in which Police Inspector M. O'Sullivan and Sergeant H. G. Clarke unfortunately lost
their lives.

The affair, being the first of its kind for
many years, caused a considerable public sensation; and
subscription lists forthwith opened on behalf of the depend-
ents of those killed by the Europeon and the Chinese
Communities respectively, brought in a sum of some 227,000.
3.
The two European officers have left widows,
both aged 31 years, and both having two young children,
while Mrs Clarke is expecting mother very shortly. The
Unofficial Kembers of the Councils have approached me with
regard to the pensions payable to these families, asking that the Government will grant specially liberal terms, with- out taking into consideration the amounts that they are to receive from the public subscription. The pensions under the Widows and Orphans Pensions Ordinance, 1908, are £61.8.0.
and £27.10.5. respectively.

I have referred the matter to the Executive Council who advise that the pension to each family inclusive
of the pensions from the Widows and Orphans Fund should be at
