inseparable from the agreement which he himself had original}

made and that you would not wish us on your behalf, to accept

his grudging consent to them. All along he had seemed to

regard acceptance by the Hospital of the Colony's contribution

as a favour to be confe rred, while we naturally held the

exact opposite of this opinion, and the time appeared to

us to have come to show him that it was impossible for us to

adjust our views to his.

A letter was, therefore, written to the Honorary

Secretary plainly stating that in the circumstances created

by the President's letter, we felt free to say that you would

much prefer that the Hospital should accept the alternative

offer which you had made.

With this letter before them, the Committee passed

the President's resolution, altered to record your wishes

in the matter as intimated by us, and accepting your alterna-

tive offer of £200 monthly for the duration of the war.

The passing of this resolution was announced in a

letter from the Secretary of the Hospital on the 21st Novembe

and the fact was wired to you on the following day.
