made and that you would not wish us on your behalf, to accept
his grudging consent to them. All along he had seemed to
regard acceptance by the Hospital of the Colony's contribution
as a favour to be confe rred, while we naturally held the
exact opposite of this opinion, and the time appeared to
us to have come to show him that it was impossible for us to
adjust our views to his.
A letter was, therefore, written to the Honorary
Secretary plainly stating that in the circumstances created
by the President's letter, we felt free to say that you would
much prefer that the Hospital should accept the alternative
offer which you had made.
With this letter before them, the Committee passed
the President's resolution, altered to record your wishes
in the matter as intimated by us, and accepting your alterna-
tive offer of £200 monthly for the duration of the war.
The passing of this resolution was announced in a
letter from the Secretary of the Hospital on the 21st Novembe
and the fact was wired to you on the following day.
