SHIPMENT OR CANNED FRUITS TO HANDELSVEREENING VORHEEN j. MOHRMANN & CO., MACASSAR.
We are advised by our Hongkong Office that you have informed then you have no power to release the shipment of
canned fruit, etc., made by us per the ss. "NIPPON MARU" on
June 23rd, 1916, consigned to Handelsvereeninging vorheen
J. Mohrmann & Co., Macassar which you held on arrival at
Hongkong.
We understand that you require a communication from us
submitting the full facts, and that you would then refer the
matter to the Colonial Secretary for decision.
The facts are these: On March 13, 1915, we received an
order for canned fruits, etc., from Handelsvereeninging-vorheen
J. Mohrmann & Co., for shipment to Macassar. We have always
considered this house a Dutch institution, operating in the
Netherlands, and had no knowledge at all that they were black listed by the British Government, or we most assuredly would have declined their orders, in the same way as we have refused many others, irrespective of the fact that we have been doing
business with them for sometime past.
Inorder that we may fully establish these facts, we enclose a letter received from our Bankers, The Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, in this regard, and remind you that the cargo was accepted for delivery by the Toyo Kisen Kaisha Steamship Company, a Japanese Line.
We had no knowledge of the fact that this firm was blacklisted. The Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation,
