I am directed by Mr Secretary

Long to inform you that his attention

has been drawn to the fact that since

the 14th October, 1916, you have been

in receipt of a detached duty allowance

at the rate of 28/6d a day.

2. Mr Long has been in communica-

tion with the Treasury on the ratter, an!

he is informed that, if this allowance

were dra.n by an officer lent from the

Home service for Naval service during

the war, a corresponding deduction would

be made from the balance of his civil

salary payable to`him under the

Treasury Circulars of August, 1914.

2. As you are aware, it is the

custom of t.is Department to follow the

practice of the Treasury in deciding
