On the 6th instant Your Excellency handed me copy of a despatch received from His Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in regard to the activities in China of the Basel Mission and inquired concerning the Imperial Government's available informa- tion. I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of this inquiry and also of Your Excellency's subsequent Note No.22 of the 16th instant on the subject of the Société Commerciale des Missions which may be connected with the Basel Mission.

As regards Your Excellency's ábove mentioned enquiry I promptly sent telegraphic instructions to the Japanese Minister in China and to the Japanese Consul-General at

Shanghai to investigate and report. Baron Mayashi has

telegraphed that he himself had no information respect-

ing the operations of the mission in question but that

having received an intimation from the British Legation

at Paking that their operations would appear to be con- fined to the Province of Kwantung he had instructed

the Imperial Consul General at Canton to make enquiries

into the matter.

I have the honour to inform Your Excellency that from a telegram now received from the said Consul General at Canton it appears that the Mission have established the centre of their activities at Li-lang in Fung-kwan District and taken as the sphere of their activities the Eastern half of Kwangtung Province that
