N° 289.

GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG. 10th. September, 1917.

I have the honour to inform you that the owner of I.L. 1375 in Caine Road, hatched in red on the enclos -ed plan, wishes to sell it, and it is desirable that the Government should acquire the property in order to effect on improvement in the alignment of the road at this point indicat- -ed on the plan by a red ink line. The motor traffic along Caine Road is now heavy and the sharp bend which it is proposed to get rid of is most dangerous both for the occupants of motor cars and other persons using the road.

2.

It is my intention that the remainder of the land should be added to the adjoining site reserved for Police Married Quarters, the demand for which will probably be considerable during the next few years.

3.

The property standing on I.L. 1375 is at present assessed at only £1,200 a year, but the house is a poor one, and a purchaser would certainly build a new one. In fact enquiries have already been made of the Building Authority as to whether buildings of three storeys would be permitted on the lot. It is believed that the price agreed on between the omer and a probable purchaser is $24,000 but in the case of resumption by the Government a somewhat higher sum would no

doubt

HE RIGHT HONOURABLE

WALTER LONG, M.P.,
