Sir,

IRES

GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG. 3rd. August, 1917.

I have the honour to inform you that at

6.15 p.m. on the 2nd. May, 1917, while Chinese Detective Police Constable Lau Lin was returning from duty, he noticed seven suspicious characters crossing the frontier from Chinese Territory into British Territory. The Detective held up the men and, whilst searching one of thes, was shot through the head and killed.

2.

In view of the good character he bore and of his service of nearly 12 years I have granted a compassion- -ate allowance of £5 a month to his widow and orphans until such date as her son is 17 years of age, namely till the 30th. of April, 1924.

3.

This sum of 85 a month has since been in-

-creased to 86 by voluntary subscriptions from Chinese re- -sidents of the New Territory as a recognition on their part of the detective's courage and of the protection which they enjoy from robberies in the New Territories.

A sum of 872 will therefore be inserted in

the Estimates for 1918.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your most obedient, humble servant,

RIGHT HONOURABLE

WALTER LONG, M.P.,
