With reference to the Colonial Secretary's

letter to you of the 78th. ultimo we are now able to submit

statistics in connection with the Calcutta-Straite & Hongkong

Line.

It is impossible for us to define what is

'essential cargo"; we have therefore made a regume of the actual

oarryings from Hongkong to the Straits and Calcutta and feca

Caloutta to the Straits, Hongkong and shanghai to the Facific

Ccast (Transhipment at Hongkong) and to Japan.

In the first group of figures under the heading

of Cargo carried from Hongkong, those puier to Indo-China

parryings only. The second group of figures are eelf explanatory,

with this exception that it has been found impossible to separate

cargo destined for Hongkong and shanghai; for the purpose of

oalculation, however, we think it will be quits in order for

you to look upon the 8721 tons of Gunnies and 1720 tons Tea

as forming the bulk of Shanghai cargo. There may also be a

small quantity of Sundries to Shanghai included in the 1776 tone

shown in the statement.
