Secretary of State, who will determine the salaries and
number of the establishment in any Colony after consultation
with the Governor. Such appointments should, we considor, be
mado on the recommendation of the Director of Colonial Audit.
The appointents of Loorl Auditore and Assistant Auditora
will be subject in all other respects to the conditions which
apply to other Colonial Civil Servants of corresponding rink
or position as laid down in the Regulations for His Mjesty's
Colonial Service and the local reg:lations of the Colony in
which they are sorving".

At the present the sole of salary of an
Assistent Auditor is £420 to £540 per annum, with annual
increments of £15. This sonle may, at first, appeur adequate,
but, when you considor that free quartors are not provided, nor are free pasnges granted, it will be observed that it comperes unfavourably with other Colonies. It has been customary to send man of considerable audit experions to this Colony, and, as such men are usually of marringeable
age, the question of double (or more) pasungo money iɔ a very serious matter. Also, it should not be overlooked that the opportunities of obtaining extra ewoluwento in tho nature of "acting" allowances are of the most mengrs descript

The present scale darlary was brought into line with the old Class III appointments in 1910 but when the scale of salary of these appointments was raised in 1911 to 2400 to £560 with annual increments of £20 and duty pay of 100 per annum the sole for Assistant Auditors re- -mined unalterad. The cmiseion of a corr sponding increase to members of this Department has always bạm considered by them as contrary to the principle expressed in the extract from the Report quoted in para. 3 of this letter.

I would also bring to your notice that when the Assistant Auditors now serving in the Colony
accepted
