The land Companies under my direction are largely interested in the Praye East Reclamation scheme now in progress which, when completed, will add a further large reclaimed water frontage to the Colony onebling it to extend both its godown accommodation and its facilities for housing Chinose, and the scheme which
was for some time in abeyance has now been revived
through my efforts and is taking practical shape.
I draw attention to these points not from any personal reasons, but to evidence the fact that my long asso- ciation with the two Councils and the Companies I have alluded to has necessarily involved the close consi- deration at all times of the factors making for or militating against the interests and future of the
Colony.

The growth and expansion of the Colony since my arrival have been phenomenal and in them I have had a humble Bhare. All my interests are bound up in the Colony and for many years its needs, its problems and
ite future have been my constant study and care. Living here, as I have done, and bound up as I am with its interests I have closely studied all questions likely to jeopardize its position or advanco ita prosperity. I have watched many generations of merchants come and go. In few casos are their interests confined to the Colony, in few cases are they entirely dependent on the Colony, in few casos are they concerned with the prosperity of the Colony as apart from the In fow cases is the prosperity of their own firms. prosperity of the Colony material to them after they
have made their money and retired.
They are, I think,
