the debate on the Budget proposals in the Lerislative Council this
year, the suggestion of a grant of land for this purpose had the
unanimous support of the "unofficial morbers". We would also
submit the following facts for your further consideration:-
$140,000 has been given by the business community of Hongkong
in order to erect the building.
220
That the scheme has the enthusiastic support of most of the
leading Bankers, Professional men and Kerchants here.
That the Government is by far the largest employer of young
men in the Oclony, and may therefore reasonably be expected to
generously assist a scheme which is so palpably for the welfare of
the Colony.
That inasmuch as this War has proved and is proving the value
of men who are physically "fit", the Government may reasonably and
appropriately be asked to assist any scheme which is likely to
conserve the young manheed of the Nation.
That a successful "Y.M.C.A." has been established here for
years, but work and possibilities of development in desirable
directions have been hampered and checked by the high rental we were compelled tom pay for a suitable building which owing to the War and shrinkage of members and financial support, entirely arising out of
War conditione, we were compelled to relinquish.
We therefore pray that in view of all the foregoing facts Your Excellency will recommend to the Secretary of State for the Colonies
that an area of about 8,000 feet in the "Pedder Street" frontare of
the Old Post Office" site be granted by the Government for the
purpose of erecting a European Y.M.C.A. building.
We attach a rough sketch of the suggested area.
As there is likely to be a large influx of young men into the
Colony soon after the War is over, we are extremely anxious to put
the work in hand at the earliest possible moment.
We have &c.,
