With reference to your Despatch No. 11 of the

January last, I have the honour to trmamit in duplicnte a copy of a statement, which was submitted to this Government in January last by the Cond Paymaster showing that the Colonial Contribution from the 1st. January to the 31st. December, 1916, waS the equivalent of £202,059. 16. 8, while the local expenditure

It may be that there of the Imperial Garrison was £185,927 is further expenditure on the Garrison chargeable to the year 1916 which will make the total cost of the Garrison for the year more than the Colonial contribution referred to above, but before I annction any further payments in respect of the year 1916 I should be glad to receive your instructions. In this connection it would be convenient to have a statement of the total cost of the Garrison⠀
for the year 1915.

You will understand that I am raising this
question with a view to conforming with the law as set out in the pro viso to Section 5 of the Defence Contribution Ordinance 1901 (Ordinance No. 1 of 1901) and not with a view to saving the Colony any expenditure. It is the intention of the members of the Legislative Council to place any surplus revenue there may be at
