CLASS I.

MR. HALLIFAX: Secretary for Chinese Affairs, 2900 to £1,050. Lives

with a wife and one child at the Peak, and has a child

in England. During the last eight years he has spe more than £1,000 in addition to his pay, the money being

a legacy,

CLASS II.

UR. CHURCHILL: First Assistant Director of Public Works, 2690 to £780

and £75 Duty Pay. Lives at the Peak with a wife and three young sons, He has no finandal resources of any

kind, except a sum of £200 which, in view of the state

of his health, he has found it imperative to put by for

passages to England. He could not have saved anything

except for the fact that he draws $150 a month as

Adjutut of Volunteers while his wife draws à similar

amount as temporary Sister at the Victoria Hospital. He

lives as cheaply as possible, has been compelled, owing to his financial circumstances, to give up all entertain- -ing, and so feels bound to decline all invitations. He

is of the opinion that he was considerably better off in

Caylen prior to promotion,

MR. JACKMAN:

MR. JACKS:

Executive Ingineer, First Grade, Public Works Depart-

-mmt, #570 to 4650 and £60 Duty Pay. Lives with his

wife at the Peak, He has to supplement his pay by

private means in order to live in his present very

quiet style.

Land Officer, £660 to £780. Lives with his wife and 2

children at Magazine Gap. He has since his marriage

found it necessary to supplement his pay from private

merna.
