Through the courtesy of His Britmnio njesty's Consul-General at Yunnan-fu, I have bem furnishod with copies of

the Despatches which he addressed to Sir John Jordan under the detas natel in the margin on the subject of the hostile attitude

of the Tonkin Covemment towards British trade,

and I have now the honour to transit the

encloest copy of a letter from Mr. Goffe on the subject of the restriction of the privilege accorded to British goods of entering Indo-China under the siniwm tariff for the duration of the mr, together with the sexmpanying copy of oor- -respondence with the Hongkong General #hamber of Commaren on tha

subject of such restriction.

As no doubt you are in correspondence with

His Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs on this question I shall be obligei if you will bring to notice the disability placed by the reomt nation of the Authorities in Tonkin

upon the trade of this Colony.

A copy of this latter is being sent to the

Secretary of State for the Colonies.
