I have the honour to aadress you on a matter

affecting the completion of the building of two

steamers by the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Co., Hong-

kong for the Siam Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., sangkok,

and to ask your valued advice as to what should be

my procedure to have these vessels completed.

-

My Company the Straits Steamship Co. Ltd., Singapore, la purely British concern about four years ago, purchased the controlling interest in the Siam

Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., of Bangkok, a Company under

the Siamese flag. This was done to consolidate our

position on the Malay Peninsula Coast Shipping and to

keep out the continued encroachment on Malay ports of

the East Asiatic Company, Denmark, who at that time con-

trolled the Siam Steam Navigation Co.

The holding of the Straits Steamship Co. in the

Siam Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., 18 5,100 shares, out

or a total of 10,000 shares. The remaining 4,900

shares are almost entirely in the hands of the East Asiatic Co. Ltd., Copenhagen, and the King and Princes

of Siam. The details of these holdings I have not

before me. The steamers of the Siam Steam Navigation Co. serve ports on the Malay Peninsula as far north as Kelautan from Singapore and then on to Bangkok.
