Mr. Holyoak cabled both to the Texas Company and me that an agreement
jointly with my firm was satisfactory to him;
(3) beoause I am naturally aware that, even in face of these
glaring breaches of yours, a settlement out-of-court will as always
save no end of worries and unpleasantness to all concerned;
but not least,
and last,
(4) because it must obviously be our endeavor to do all we can
to prevent the Texas Ocupany from opening up their own offices (as they
are doing in Shanghai) and to thus prevent the last link being broken
wilfully as you are about to break it which connects this busine88
with British intereste, a business which has been in British hands for
quite six years.
I must, however, repeat here what I cabled to my partner, viz:
that counsel and I, in face of these happenings and considering the times
we are living in (from which you apparently tried to benefit in this
deplorable manner), cannot consent to any settlement which does not in-
clude a cash payment by you, as an earnest so to speak; and I am quite
sure that every man of sense will agree with this advice of counsel,
Please communicate this letter to your Hongkong partner, as
it save me doing so, As it is, I am, for reasons stated under (2),
following only reluctantly counsel's advice and my duty to add the firm
your Hongkong partner is managing, Messrs. Reise & Co., to the address
of this letter.
Yours faithfully,
signed: H. SAnders
