actually continue your attempts to acquire this agency without my Con- pany'a consent. True, as lir. Douglass' cable proceeds, you "will compensate us for loss of agency", but that of course does not mitigate the seriousness of your breaches in fact it only accentuates them, showing that you are well aware of your wrong-doings for which you of- fer this compensation. It does indeed remind one, particularly in view of your other truly Frussian tactics, of the German Chancellor's unforgettable statement to the effect that he had to "hack his way" through Belgium but was quite willing to "compensate" his victims thereafter !

True, you in London have since declared, in your letter to my Company of the 10th alto., that Hongkong (to whom, as you write, you cabled my message, confirmed on page one hereof) telegraphed in reply:

"Statement false, bank telegram New York not cur seeking." but have you stopped to think what this means ? It would mean no less than that the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation went deliberately out of its way and asked its manager in New York to tell the Texas Com- pany: that it was "absolutely necessary" that Texas Co, make direct ar- rangements with Reiss Company" for handling cargo ex "Tancred" (as if there was no other British firm in Hongkong to handle this cargo and the business ), and that: "the Reise Sanders agreement (not concerning that Bank) positively ceases on the 30th June."
