I am at a loss to know what to do in regard to the point regarding the handling of the business by your Bank, as despite the Trust Company's subsequent justified request to waive this demand, it was successfully upheld. I will see you about it, as it is obviously my duty to inform the Guaranty Trust people, who will insist more than before that the Hongkong part of the business be handled by the American bank referred to.
As to the second part of the cable: "Hongkong Government refuses port and cable facilities to any agency in which Sanders Rehders are concerned," I had not told you anything purposely about our negotiations with Messrs. Reiss & Co. and the Texas Company regarding the appointment of the former, jointly with us, as the agents of the latter. I only told you that Messrs. Reiss might not continue to handle this business after the 30th June, and the Guaranty Trust Company wrote to you to the same effect.
However, in view of this cable, it is now my painful duty to inform you that your Hongkong friends are, no doubt unconsciously, lending themselves to help Messrs. L. Reiss Bros. & Co., London, and in turn Messrs. Reiss & Co., Hongkong, not only to commit a serious breach of contract but wrongfully, and under pressure of the threats contained in this cable, to exclude us from a business which we placed trustingly into their hands. I put the London firm first because it was only on the 4th March last that the Hongkong firm cabled both to the Texas Company and me their acceptance of the proposed Texas Agreement jointly with us.
