With further reference to your letter of the 4th inst
we beg to report on the present state of negotiatione in
regard to the Texas Company's oil business in Hongkong and
Southern China, as follows:-
Messrs.L. Reise Brothers & Co., for Reiss & Co. Hong-
kong, have given us notice to determine the Agreement at
present in force between us as on the 30th June next, and
have informed us that they will not carry on the business
except as direct agents for the Texas Company, and for a
contract period of not less than three years. They express
readiness to pay us an adequate return for the introduction
of the business, without specifying what such return would
be.
Without dwelling on the advantage which it is sought
to take of this Company, we would point out that while,
in the interests of British trade, we are ready if need be
to sacrifice a part of the profits due to us, who have borne
