DEPARTMENT-
Referring to what I wrote you on the 29th
November, I have now heard from Hongkong that the Liquidators
have remitted to New York the balance of the proceeds of the
second consignment in the s.s."Liddesdale", the cargo immediate-
ly preceding that shipped in the "Panama”.
The question at issue therefore between the Texas
Company and the Liquidators of Reuter Brockelmann & Co. is now
reduced to the balance of proceeds of the first consignment
in the "Liddesdale", which Messrs.Shewan Tomes no doubt claim as
part of the general estate which they are "liquidating".
This for your private guidance, in case the matter has to be
again referred to.
On Friday we had a cheerful cable from Cheetham,
resigning his appointment, having accepted a position with old
friends in Shanghai in the piece goods business. He is thus
going back to his old haunts and the trade he knows, and,
frankly, I do not blame him as he must have been led a dog's
life in Hongkong. It now remains to be seen whether Messrs.
Reiss & Co. will turn over a new leaf and help us to persuade
the Texas Company that they are fit people to run the business
