Assistant Cable Censor, the duties of which I also
performed. That the Service didnot suffer great detriment
during these periods I would draw your attention to the
fact that His Excellency the Governor recommended me to
the Secretary of State for extra remuneration, and on
another occasion that my salary should be raised.
I beg to submit that if these arrangements could
be made so that the other departmental officers could
take ordinary and sick leave, a concession might now be grant
granted in this time of great national emergency. I would
also point out that in Hong Kong and other Colonies such
as the Straits Settlements and Nigeria Government, Officials
have been allowed to be relieved of their civil duties till
the termination of the war.
I feel at this time when the whole manhood of my own
family are serving in His Majesty's Forces; when employers
of labour are asked by those of high authority to reduce
their staffs to a minimum; when the single as well as the
married men of this Country for the first time in our
National History are likely to be conscripted, that I
cannot conscientiously go back to my work which I know
from experience can be done on a minimum staff.
In conclusion I would add that on joining my
regiment, in which I had served in South Africa in 1902
and for several years after, I was appointed the
Assistant Adjutant.
The regiment is one of the largest reserve and
also draft producing units.
